Caffeine & Fertility | Fertility Naturopath

Caffeine:

Are you wondering how much caffeine is safe when trying to conceive?

The answer is - not much!

Research has shown that caffeine in amounts greater than 500mg per day is associated with increased time to pregnancy.

Even greater than 300mg per day was associated with fetal loss.

And 100mg has been associated with a higher risk of miscarriage.

The reality is caffeine needs to be limited in most fertility cases, and fully eliminated with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss.

You can work toward this goal by enjoying 1 oz of espresso per day or 16 oz coffee per day.

Alternatives include:

  • half caff

  • Swiss Water decaf

  • Dandelion root coffee alternatives ex. Dandy Blend

Examples per serving:

  • Instant coffee - 63mg

  • Decaf - 3mg

  • French press - 107mg

  • Drip - 95mg

  • Cappuccino - single - 77mg, double - 154mg

  • Espresso - single - 64mg, double - 125mg

  • K Cup - 120mg

  • Cold Brew - 159mg

  • Tim Horton’s Large - 20 ounces - 270mg

  • Tim Horton’s Medium - 14 ounces - 205mg

  • Tim Horton’s Small - 10 ounces - 140mg

  • Starbucks - https://www.caffeineinformer.com/the-complete-guide-to-starbucks-caffeine

Remember that chocolate, energy drinks, sodas, and caffeinated teas also contain caffeine. You will have to factor those into your totals.

Once pregnant this reduces to 200mg per day.
